That Fucking ‘S’ Word!

A friend of mine said to me tonight over drinks, “I haven’t been a success at anything in my life. I’m old now, and I am not a success.”

I got angry.

That fucking word – Success! What does it even mean? It’s one of my most hated words, a word I wish was banned from the dictionary.

I gave him a list of people who were considered successful but who had done nothing to earn it, who were tyrants and who were admired because of their celebrity status.

In the world of ‘now’ it means being rich doesn’t it?

It means being in control, it means doing something so well that millions of people admire you for what you have done, and you’re wanted, needed, admired, respected.

It means you stand out from the crowd, you don’t have to worry about money, you can make choices and you don’t have to settle for the cheap or the shoddy. You don’t worry, you have a high opinion of yourself and your abilities and your lifestyle or wealth is celebrated as proof of your success, however you made it, whatever you have done or not done to get it.

This is what success means to my friend, and it is what success means to so many people.

Now let’s reinvent the concept of success before it eats us alive.

Let’s think of success as bravery. For the purposes of this little exercise, let’s look in the dictionary and next to the word ‘success’ you will see the phrase: having great courage, overcoming all obstacles to get to a certain point, getting out of your comfort zone etc. etc.

In that respect we’re all successful and it’s nothing to do with money or power or popularity. My friend has a string of successes to his name and yet he can’t see the list because he equates success with money.

The list of his successes is endless, yet he can’t see it. Money might buy us choices but it doesn’t make us successful. That comes from hard work and electric belief in ourselves.

My successes are many, just like yours are; I am alive, I breathe, I love, I think, I care – five successes right there. Now go celebrate your successes. I bet you find a big list of them every single day.
